Glossary of condoms and lubricants

Welcome to our condom and lubricant glossary. This guide aims to explain the technical terms and certifications commonly used in the field, helping professionals better understand the products they offer.

A

Aloe Vera

Natural ingredient with moisturizing and soothing properties, frequently used in lubricants .

Latex allergy

Immune reaction to natural latex proteins. Alternatives include polyisoprene or polyurethane condoms; the SKYN® brand offers a full line of latex-free condoms.

B

Water based (lubricant)

Lubricant compatible with all types of condoms, easy to clean and recommended for everyday use. Find our range here .

Silicone base (lubricant)

Long-lasting, water-resistant lubricant that provides optimal glide, but is not compatible with some silicone toys. Find our range of silicone-based lubricants here .

Benzocaine

Benzocaine is a mild local anesthetic used in condoms to help delay ejaculation. It works by decreasing sensitivity to prolong the duration of intercourse. You can find it in Manix Endurance .

C

CE – Class IIb (Certification)

Certifies that the condom meets European safety, quality and effectiveness requirements. Class IIb is assigned to critical use medical devices, such as condoms, used to prevent serious risks (STIs, unwanted pregnancy).

Packaging

Packaging formats for condoms and lubricants (standard box, bottle, tube, pump, sachet, etc.).

Copolymer

Synthetic material used in latex-free condoms, ensuring elasticity and strength.

D

Shore A hardness

Indicator of the rigidity of polymer materials, particularly latex, used in the manufacture of condoms.

E

The Walsh Study (2023)

The Walsh study (2023) is a controlled, multicenter, randomized, double-blind crossover study aimed at demonstrating the non-inferiority of polyisoprene and polyurethane male condoms compared to latex condoms.

It was conducted among 300 couples .

F

Fair Rubber

Certification guaranteeing ethical production of natural latex through fair trade, our Condomz brand condoms have this certification.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

A label certifying that paper/cardboard packaging comes from sustainably managed forests. Our Condomz brand condoms have this certification.

Foil

Aluminum or plastic foil used for individual packaging of condoms, ensuring their preservation and protection against humidity, light and external contaminants.

I

ISO 4074

International standard defining the safety and performance requirements for latex condoms.

ISO 23409

An international standard that defines the safety and performance requirements for condoms made of synthetic materials (excluding latex). All non-latex condoms must comply with this standard to be marketed as medical devices.

ISO 13485

Standard governing quality management for manufacturers of medical devices, including condoms and lubricants.

L

Nominal width (size of a condom)

The nominal width of a condom refers to the width measured flat, in millimeters, when it is not stretched. This measurement is essential to ensure an optimal fit and maximum comfort for the user. A suitable width reduces the risk of slippage or breakage, thus ensuring effective protection. The CondomSizer tool makes it easy to measure your size in nominal width.

LPPR (List of Reimbursable Products and Services)

The LPPR (List of Reimbursable Products and Services) is an official list published by Health Insurance, managed by the CNAM and validated by the High Authority of Health.
It lists medical devices and health services that can be reimbursed by Social Security on medical prescription .
This includes, for example, certain condoms .

Scented lubricants

Lubricants enriched with natural or synthetic flavors, designed to add a pleasant sensory dimension to use. They are generally water-based to ensure optimal compatibility with all types of condoms. Available in different flavors (fruit, chocolate, mint, etc.), they are mainly used to diversify the experience and mask the taste of latex. Find our range here.

Heating lubricants

Formulated with heat-sensitive agents, these lubricants provide a warming sensation upon application and rubbing. Their effect can be amplified by blowing or contact with the skin. They are particularly popular for intensifying sensations and are available in water-based or silicone versions. However, it is recommended to test on a small area before use to avoid any skin reaction. Discover our range here .

Extended lubrication

Extended-release lubricants often contain specific thickening agents that delay evaporation and ensure a continuous gliding sensation. This technology is particularly useful for prolonged intercourse or for users seeking reduced friction and discomfort.

N

Nitrosamines

Nitrosamines are chemical compounds that can form during the manufacturing of latex products, including condoms. Some nitrosamines are classified as potentially carcinogenic . Condom manufacturers must adhere to strict thresholds to limit their presence and ensure user safety. The Condomz brand does not use them.

European standards

Regulations ensuring the compliance and safety of condoms and lubricants marketed in Europe.

Non-spermicides

Condoms that do not contain any chemical agent intended to immobilize or destroy sperm.

Nonoxinol

Nonoxinol-9 is a spermicidal surfactant used in some lubricants and condoms to reduce the risk of pregnancy. However, prolonged use can irritate mucous membranes and increase the risk of HIV and other STI transmission , especially in high-risk individuals. The Condomz brand does not use it.

P

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

PFAS are a family of synthetic chemicals used in various products for their waterproofing and non-stick properties. They are sometimes found in some lubricants and condom packaging. These compounds are of concern because of their persistence in the environment and their potential effects on human health .

neutral pH

Indicator ensuring that the lubricant respects the natural balance of the vaginal flora and minimizes the risk of irritation.

Polyisoprene

Synthetic alternative to natural latex, offering optimal flexibility and resistance.

Polyurethane

Hypoallergenic material used in some condoms, thinner and stronger than traditional latex.

PI condom
